Hello, and welcome to Understanding Diabetes. I’m Dr. Hemstad...

Lt Col Reynolds
...and I’m Dr. Reynolds. In the United States, approximately one in ten people have diabetes mellitus, and many more have prediabetes. It’s estimated that as many as one in four people with diabetes don’t even know they have the disease.

Maj Hemstad
That’s right, Dr. Reynolds. In this program, we’ll explain what diabetes is and how it affects the body. We’ll talk about the differences between type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. We’ll also describe the symptoms of these conditions, as well as explore strategies for prevention and treatment.

Lt Col Reynolds
Our diabetes specialists – Dr. Patel, nurse practitioner Major Spencer, registered dietician Ms. Riley, and physical therapist Capt Laydon – will provide their expertise throughout the program. Finally, we’ll introduce you to several patients who share their personal experiences with diabetes and its consequences.
