Preventing diabetes lowers the risk for the possible complications of diabetes, including:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Nerve damage
  • Kidney disease
  • Blindness
  • Foot problems, and
  • Other health conditions

The best way to prevent diabetes is to live a healthy lifestyle. This means eating a balanced diet, getting plenty of exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight.

In some cases, a person who has been diagnosed with prediabetes and is at very high risk for developing type 2 diabetes may be prescribed metformin. However, metformin is not a solution by itself. Lifestyle changes are still necessary. It’s important to note that even modest changes in lifestyle can have a big impact.
