Preparing for ERCP

To see the upper GI tract clearly, providers typically ask patients not to eat or drink for up to eight hours before an ERCP procedure. Some regular medications may also need to be adjusted or stopped for a short time before the procedure. Patients should talk to their providers about all prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements they are taking prior to the procedure.

Research has found that ERCP is generally safe during pregnancy, but for women who are pregnant, providers may make some changes to the procedure to protect the baby from x-rays.
