Welcome. Today, we're going to talk about Mental Health conditions and well-being. My name is Dr. Patel.
And I'm Dr. Jerman. It's no secret that life is complicated. On the one hand, this complexity can make our life experience rich and meaningful. At the same time, it can present challenges that may develop into mental health problems.
Stress is a universal human experience, and sometimes it can make us feel "stuck." Stress impacts how we feel physically and emotionally and influences the way we think. How we think and feel can affect the choices we make and how we behave, including how we interact with other people and with our environment. At times, it can seem like these physical, emotional, intellectual, behavioral, and environmental factors are conspiring against us, and the harder we try to get "unstuck," the more difficult and uncomfortable life becomes.
Fortunately, humans are remarkably adaptive, and it's in our nature to quickly develop coping strategies to deal with the complexities of life. Often, these coping strategies are helpful and effective. But some strategies are not so helpful and may, in fact, be harmful. These are called maladaptive coping behaviors. Fortunately, we can make changes in how we think, feel, and behave to eliminate the unhelpful strategies and establish new methods that work well. Effective coping strategies can reverse the downward spiral of suffering and build long-term resilience. This means that there is hope for positive change even if someone has been coping in unhelpful ways for a long time.
