Caring for newly born babies can pose unique challenges for physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and medical technicians. Utilizing timely and effective critical care techniques immediately following delivery is crucial, especially for a newborn in distress.
I’m Dr. William Reynolds, and I’m here to talk to you about newborn resuscitation. As you may know, approximately one percent of newborns, or 1 out of every 100 babies, will need some type of critical care procedure in order to avoid severe disability or death. Traditionally, healthcare professionals learn the mechanics of resuscitating a newborn in apprentice fashion from more experienced providers. Our goal today is to provide an understanding, not just of what needs to be done when a newborn is facing life-threatening challenges, but also to demonstrate how to perform those life-saving procedures.
In this program, we’ll cover proven techniques relating to:
- Setting up a delivery room
- Facilitating intubation and securing an endotracheal tube
- Drawing up epinephrine
- Placing an umbilical catheter
- Performing a needle thoracentesis
- Caring for a delivery complicated by meconium, and
- Running a neonatal “mega-code” using the “TeamSTEPPS” approach

One thing to keep in mind as you review this program is that the scrubs of the team members are color-coded, to clarify who is doing what. The team leader is in green, the cardiac person is in burgundy, the equipment person is in gray, and the medication nurse is in blue scrubs. This will be particularly valuable to you as you watch the team move about as they conduct the simulated neonatal “mega-code.”
