Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes in Children

Lt Col Reynolds
For parents of children with type 2 diabetes, it’s important to get medical help early and carefully follow your provider’s instructions. Let’s check in with Dr. Patel to hear about the treatment for type 2 diabetes in children.

Dr. Patel
Well, as with adults, the general goal of treatment for type 2 diabetes in children is to control their blood glucose level. There are four pillars of diabetes treatment:

  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet and following a meal plan
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Taking medications as prescribed, and
  • Monitoring blood sugar levels regularly

Most, if not all, of these steps require that the parents be involved, especially with younger children. If your child has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider to develop a treatment plan that works for you and your child.
