Chronic low back pain is back pain that lasts for more than 12 weeks. The term chronic does not refer to the severity of the pain, but rather the duration of the symptoms. The cause can be difficult to determine, but chronic back pain does not necessarily mean that there is any damage to the back.
The persistence of the back pain does, however, indicate that a medical evaluation might be necessary. Diagnosis may include a medical history, physical exam, and in some cases, imaging tests. Treatment can range from over-the-counter pain relievers to surgery, depending on the underlying cause.
