Weight Gain

Nurse Goodwin

Gaining the right amount of weight by eating the right types of food is an extremely important part of a healthy pregnancy. The total amount of weight you should gain depends on your body mass index, or BMI, when you became pregnant.

Women who were at a healthy weight before becoming pregnant should gain between 25 and 35 pounds while pregnant. You’re likely to gain two to four pounds in the first three months of your pregnancy, and about a pound a week after that.

The recommended weight gain is different for women who were overweight or underweight before becoming pregnant and for women carrying more than one baby. Your healthcare team will help you determine the ideal amount of weight to gain, based on your situation.
