Poorly controlled allergic rhinitis can lead to other medical and quality of life problems. Captain Miller, can you tell us about some of these problems?

Definitely, Dr. Flemings. The symptoms of allergic rhinitis can be disruptive to daily life, especially when they are poorly managed. This can contribute to a number of problems, including:

  • Decreased concentration and focus
  • Decreased decision-making capacity
  • Limited activities
  • Impaired hand-eye coordination
  • Problems remembering things
  • Irritability
  • Sleep problems
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Missed days of work or school
  • More motor vehicle accidents, and
  • More school or work injuries

Other related medical conditions can also develop as a result of poorly managed allergic rhinitis. Examples include:

  • Acute and chronic sinusitis
  • Nasal polyps
  • Ear infections
  • Hearing impairment
  • Abnormal development of facial bone structure
  • Sleep apnea, and
  • The development or exacerbation of asthma symptoms
