Dr. Flemings
Treatment options for lung cancer depend on the type and stage. Dr. Patel, can you tell us about some of these treatment options?

Dr. Patel
Definitely, Dr. Flemings. There are several types of standard treatments used for non-small cell lung cancer. These include:

  • Surgery
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Targeted therapy
  • Laser therapy
  • Photodynamic therapy, or PDT
  • Cryosurgery, and
  • Electrocautery

In rare cases, a provider may recommend watchful waiting, in which the patient's condition is closely monitored, but no specific treatment is given until signs or symptoms appear or change.

Some of the same or similar treatment options are available for small cell lung cancer. The standard treatments used for small cell lung cancer include:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Laser therapy, and
  • Endoscopic stent placement
