Dr. Green
The time from when a person is exposed to influenza, or flu, virus to when symptoms begin is generally about one to four days. Dr. Mansfield, can you tell us what these symptoms are?

Dr. Mansfield
Of course, Dr. Green. For most people, flu symptoms start suddenly, not gradually. These symptoms usually include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches, and
  • Fatigue

Some people may also have vomiting and diarrhea, but this is more common in young children than in adults.

It's important to note that although fever is very common with the flu, not everyone who has the flu has a fever.

Most symptoms go away in four to seven days, but coughing and fatigue may last for weeks.
