Dr. Mayzik
Recovery following a skin biopsy may vary depending on the procedure used. Dr. Alvarado, can you give us some recovery tips common to all skin biopsy procedures?

Dr. Alvarado
Of course, Dr. Mayzik. After a skin biopsy is completed, the wound may be covered with a sterile dressing and wound care instructions provided. As the local anesthetic wears off, there may be some discomfort, but the provider will recommend a pain reliever to help alleviate any pain.

The provider may discuss any results that are immediately available, and give instructions about resuming routine activities and medications. Contact a provider immediately if any of the following occur:

  • Signs of infection, including fever and chills
  • Redness, swelling, increasing pain, excessive bleeding, or discharge from the biopsy site
  • Pain that you can't control with the medications you've been given, or
  • Any new symptoms
