Chances of Developing Breast Cancer

A woman’s lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, or the chances of a woman developing breast cancer at some point in her life, is approximately 1 in 8. However, many women find it more helpful to understand the chances of being diagnosed with breast cancer at specific ages or over specific time periods. The chart below shows the percentage of women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer within 10 years of their current age. For example, 2.38 percent of women, or 1 woman out of every 42, who are now age 50 will be diagnosed with breast cancer sometime in the next 10 years.

Age 30 0.44 percent 1 in 227
Age 40 1.47 percent 1 in 68
Age 50 2.38 percent 1 in 42
Age 60 3.56 percent 1 in 28
Age 70 3.82 percent 1 in 26
